Steve Scalise drops out of Speaker race

Breaking News, as of 10/12/2023: House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) just announced that he is dropping out of the Speakership election.

This follows him winning the GOP conference’s nomination of him, which had been decided in a vote behind closed doors. The results of said vote had been Scalise 113, Jim Jordan 99.

“If you look at where our conference is there’s still work to be done. Our conference still has to come together and is not there,” the Louisiana Republican said. “There are still some people that have their own agendas, and I was very clear we have to have everybody put their agendas on the side and focus on what this country needs. This country is counting on us to come back together. This House of Representatives needs a speaker and we need to open up the House again, but clearly not everybody is there, and there’s still schisms that have to get resolved.”

Many are left wondering if anyone will be able to garnish the 217 votes needed to be elected speaker, or if it will perhaps even be House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), if he were to gain support of five or more Republican representatives.
