House Passed Bill to Avoid Shutdown

UPDATE (11/20/2023 11:15 AM Central): The Senate approved the bill, and the President signed the bill, both before the November 17th deadline. The government shutdown was closely avoided.

Yesterday (11/14/2023), the House of Representatives passed a bipartisan ‘stopgap’ bill to extend limited government funding until January 19th, 2024.

This bill would continue to fund military construction, housing, the Department of Energy, Veterans’ Affairs, and more, until January 19th, 2024. Anything not covered by that would be funded until February 2nd, 2024.

Controversially, this bill does not include any additional funding for Ukraine nor Israel. The Republican conference cannot agree on whether to support said countries.

All of that being said, the Senate still has to pass it, and the President must sign it as well. If all of that does not happen by the Friday 11/17/2023 deadline, then the Government will go into shutdown.

As previously discussed, a Government shutdown would cause most Government employees to not get paid on time. After a shutdown, said Government employees would receive ‘backpay’, which is the money that would have been owed.
