Polish incumbent party is challenged

,

The Polish election night was last night, Sunday 10/15/2023. It appears that the highly controversial right-wing populist party that stands for ‘Law and Justice’, may have lost their parliamentary majority.

The primary opposition bloc, a faction led by former PM Donald Tusk, may get a majority, but for that to happen they will have to form a coalition with some smaller parties.

According to the exit poll, voter turnout may have been as high as 73% this election cycle, which is a record-breaking number in the history of Polish parliamentary elections.

The leader of the law and justice party, Jarosław Kaczyński, acknowledged the fact that they may lose their control of parliament.

Meanwhile, a centrist coalition called Third Way could possibly come out on top as well. They criticize both of the major parties, and believe that neither of them are ideal for the future of Poland. That being said, the leader of Third Way Szymon Hołownia has stated in the past that he would not form a coalition with the law and justice party.

We’ll have to see how this turns out, as coalitions and pacts are formed or broken. Stay tuned for more updates.
