Mike Johnson elected Speaker of the House

, ,

Yesterday and the day before (10/24 & 10/25/2023) the Republicans met again in conference to come up with a unanimous Speaker nomination. They nominated Rep Mike Johnson (R-LA), following Tom Emmer from losing the nomination.

The fourth vote for Speaker was held yesterday (10/25/2023), and Mike Johnson won. Mike Johnson of Louisiana is now Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Vote count of the Fourth Speaker vote:
Total – 429
Rep Mike Johnson (R-LA) – 220
Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) – 209
Other – 0
Present – 0

Speaker Mike Johnson was endorsed by Former President Trump for the position, however the Speaker will not say if he believes that the election was stolen. The reason for this is likely because if he says that Biden won, the reactionaries in the Freedom Caucus could vote him out, but if he says that Trump actually won, then the moderates could vote him out. Every time he gets asked about his opinion on the matter, he carefully avoids answering the question.

One thing is certain, however: both sides of the aisle want to get back to work. There is now the looming possibility of a government shutdown in the vicinity again, for we have until November 17th to get a new deal. If we have not figured it out by then, the government will go into shutdown.

Speaker Johnson has proposed a bill that would allow for spending in the short-term. It would extend government spending until it expires, likely expiring on January 15th or April 15th, 2024. The Republican conference has yet to decide on which date to choose for the temporary bill’s expiration.
