Veteran’s Day

, ,

Veterans Day was on Saturday (11/11/2023), and observed on the day before that this year. In the United States, Veterans Day is a holiday that honors our veterans, both alive and dead, who have served in a war. But did you know that the term Veterans Day wasn’t used until 1947?

Originally, the holiday on November 11th was originally known as Armistice Day. The first celebration was by the entente troops of the United States, Great Britain, and France in 1919, a year after the end of the first World War.

Today, Veterans Day is traditionally celebrated by parades, ceremonies, as well as other festivities. Some people in the midwest will have a brat fry, but not as many do on Veterans Day as on Memorial Day. As well as that, it’s also a federal holiday, meaning most government workers get the day off.

It is interesting to see how holidays and traditions change over time. We here at The Wisconsin Advance hope that you had a good Veterans Day!
