Governor Evers (D) is suing the Republican-controlled Wisconsin State Legislature in the Wisconsin State Supreme Court. The Republicans in the State Legislature have struck down just about everything the Governor has tried to do, and he’s getting sick and tired of zero progress being made. Many Democrats and centrists agree with him as well.
Governor Evers stated: “Republican legislators are unconstitutionally obstructing basic functions of government—actions that have not only aimed to prevent state government from efficiently and effectively serving the people of our state but are now actively harming tens of thousands of Wisconsinites every day across our state . . . I’m a born-and-raised Wisconsinite, and what I know for certain is that Wisconsinites expect elected officials to govern, they expect us to get things done, and they expect their government to work and work for them—and certainly not against them. I promised the people of our state that I would always work to get things done, and I’d always try to do the right thing, and today, I’m doing both by insisting we follow our state’s constitution.”*
This is a big deal, as Governor Evers and the Republican-controlled State Legislature have disagreed on key issues such as trans rights, abortion rights, and the electoral maps. The State Legislature designs and approves both the Congressional district maps, and their own State Senate and Assembly maps. However, the Governor must also approve the maps. That being said, Governor Evers has been pretty lenient on the matter, eventually usually giving in and approving the redesigns.
However, now that the Wisconsin Supreme Court is controlled by a 4-3 liberal majority, he may be able to force the Republican legislature to cave in on issues such as redesigning the maps to be more fair and just. We will have to see how the lawsuit plays out.
