Kevin McCarthy to leave Congress at the end of this year

Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) stated earlier today that he will resign from Congress at the end of this year.

Rep Kevin McCarthy was ousted from his role as Speaker two months ago by far-right Republicans and Democrats alike. The far-right Republicans were upset that he let the bill to temporarily extend government spending go to the floor and pass.

The former-speaker has now said that he is leaving ‘to serve America in new ways.’

“I know my work is only getting started,” he additionally said to the Wall Street Journal.*

2 months ago, Kevin McCarthy actually suggested that he may resign before his term is up, which we did an article about as well. Due to that, this was not much of a surprise.

California’s 20th Congressional District, which is where he currently represents, is a pretty solidly conservative district. Therefore, it is not likely that a Democrat will replace him.

Governor Newsom of California (D) is required to call a special election within two weeks of the seat becoming vacant, due to California state law. However, when former-Congressman Duncan Hunter (R-CA) resigned in January 2020, the governor left the seat open for 10 whole months.
