I promised myself that I wouldn’t write during the Holidays, but everything is happening so I guess I will, even if this article is pretty late.
The Wisconsin Supreme Court, with its 4-3 liberal majority, sided with Governor Tony Evers (D) in the case of Wisconsin Legislature v. Evers.
The majority decision, wrote by liberal Justice Jill Karofsky, and supported by all three other liberal justices, urged the State Legislature (controlled majority by Republicans) to create new maps. However, her decision said that the court would “proceed toward adopting” remedial maps if the legislature stalls, or the if the Governor vetoes a redistricting proposal.
This is going to affect the all 33 State Senate districts and 99 State Assembly districts in Wisconsin.
For a long time, the way that our districts get made has been a controversial process. You see, the legislature makes their own districts, as well as the Congressional districts. That means that they could draw them in their party’s favor in order to win the election much easily, however that is not how fair elections are supposed to work.
Many people primarily on the liberal side of the aisle have been calling for a 3rd party nonpartisan organization to make the legislative maps instead. The purpose of that is to insure that no bias is integrated into the dividing lines. However, it’s unclear how this would actually work in process.
No matter what your opinion is on this issue, you must admit that this is a pretty big change in how Wisconsin politics are going to go in the future. We will most likely see a vast blue wave in both houses of the state legislature, since the split between Democrats and Republicans are close 50/50 among the populace of this state, however the districts have long been favoring more conservative candidates.
It’s unclear the full extents of this as of now, so we will be sure to update you on any future news about this, and all other topics. Make sure to Follow us on Twitter/X @WiscAdvance and turn on notifications so that you never miss an article.
